August 2023, OneBeat organized its 7th international Abroad program bringing 12 diverse artists together from Indonesia, Malaysia and the United States in Pontianak, West Kalimantan in partnership with guest Artistic Director Nursalim Yadi Anugerah. The program, inspired by Borneo’s diverse ecosystems, featured masterclasses with pioneering composer Rully Shabara a visit with local Dayak traditional school Arus Kualan and a multimedia concert at warehouse artspace Port99.
Rantai Bunyi is a model for tracing Nusantara music through historical soundscapes, contemporary knowledge exchange, and future-oriented exploration, with Pekan Kebudayaan Nasional (PKN) 2023 focusing on string-based sound materials, with or without vocals. It connects shared musical characteristics across diverse regions—Bangka Belitung, West Kalimantan, Southeast Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, and Tanah Papua—creating spaces to meet, exchange, intersect, and reflect on the interconnected soundscape of Nusantara.
